The Vanden Brook Cottage
The First Cottage on Kunzer Beach Lane

Before the Scott years began, another cottage was built, a cottage & family that had a significant role in the history of Kunzer Beach Lane.  It was the first cottage built (circa 1959) on the beach by Bill & Dorothy Vanden Brook.  The Vanden Brook and Scott families would soon become close family friends.  Not only were the two sets of parents (Bill & Dorothy and Landy & Dorothy) good friends, but both families had similar aged kids, who remain friends well over 50 years later.  Bill and his son, Michael, built the cottage before the road was even built.  They hauled all the material on a rugged path along the beach.  The foundation consisted of concrete blocks and the timber was milled locally out of old telephone poles.  It helped that Bill was an employee of the telephone company.   The two cottages stood side by side for over 58 years until Landy's A-Frame was torn down.  Let's hope the Vanden Brook cottage stands for another 50 years.  A lot of beautiful memories were created between the two cottages and their families.

Almost enclosed.  Dad, kids and mom (in window) take a well deserved break.

The finished product.
The water level in the bay dropped shortly thereafter and didn't return for several years.

Just how far the water level dropped can be seen in this photo of the Vanden Brook and
Scott familes playing volleyball in an area that use to be covered with water.
